A note from Paul Frey, the pastor

"In 1996 I was privileged to baptize 4 adults who had become  Christians. One of these people was disowned by her family, and warned that if she returned to her home country she might face death for having become a Christian.  In 2006, in Laredo, I had the privilege of meeting a young Iranian woman who had become a Christian 3 years earlier and been baptized even at the risk of being killed. She eventually fled the country and is being granted religious asylum.

Baptism into Christ and his church is not something to take lightly. We rightly expect those who come to be baptized or those who wish to have small children baptized to affirm their intention to be committed to Jesus and his body. Many in our world today have paid a very high cost simply for being baptized and we dare not trivialize their sacrifice."

What we expect from parents of children being baptized and of older children and adults seeking baptism

1) Commitment to Christ.

2) Commitment to Christian Community.

3) Commitment to the Anglican Communion.

4) Commitment to God's mission in the larger community.

Parents of candidates are expected to attend baptism classes. Download the class worksheets (English) (Espanol) and call the church office about the next class. For more read "Infant Baptism."

Baptism and Children's Communion - Children who are baptized are welcome to receive communion. For info read "Children and Communion".  (Ninos y Comunion)

What happens at baptism

In baptism, we take a very common substance, water, and do something very uncommon.  In the simple act of immersing someone, or pouring water on someone we pray for God to completely transform their life.

Christians disagree about whether it is appropriate to baptize infants,  about whether you should be immersed, or if getting your head wet is enough., and even about exactly what baptism accomplishes.  But all Christians (with very few exceptions) believe that baptism is a very important step in the Christian life and part of what Jesus himself commanded us to do.

At Christ Church we baptize infants and adults. We believe that the primary actor in baptism is not the person getting baptized or the person doing the baptizing, but God.  We believe that somehow in baptism, God is beginning a work of profound transformation with an eternal significance.
